Our Shrine - Part Three

The brief:

For the Final part of our Shrine we have to make our Shrine in groups of two, combining our passions. Joe's passion is random images and mine is of course skulls.

So one of our ideas was to make a suspended skull using Joe's random images to make up the shape of the skull.

We got together yesterday to do a quick trial run and here are a couple of photos from it.

Comic Sans family day out

On Monday we got to take our Comic Sans letters out. Well, when I say out - I mean in and around the side of the campus, not so much out out. There was mention of The Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, which would have been great, but by the time we were done we were all so cold and hungry - so some of us went to Mcdonalds.

d is for dumped - Comic sans trashed.

d is for doing nothing - Just lying around!

d is for ducks - What better then a dip in the rather large puddle outside the college, after all it was weather for ducks.

d is for diagonal - Family snap on the steps of the Tate.

d is for done - Comic sans family waiting to catch the bus home.

Artist's Book - The Rules - Updated

The brief:

We are to produce an edition of 50 pieces of work (95mm x 130mm) and a blank album (A5 double page spread). I only have to design one postcard and print it 50 times, then we'll swap post cards so we end up with 47 different postcards for our artist's multiple collection.

The title of the book is 'The Rules'. It should refer to the artist's book collection at Chelsea: however you may interpret this in any way you like.

So, after seeing the artist's collection is became apparent that there seems to be no rules when it comes to artist's books. They can have all text, no text and repetition is a big idea.

I concentrated on the idea of an artist's book, no rules, so what is an artist's book. I came up with several things that it wasn't so in turn it becomes an artist's book idea. Here is what I've done so far:

Hey presto - manifesto's

The brief:

You will
 create TWO pieces of typography. One will be your interpretation of a manifesto 
issued between 1880 and 1930. The second requires you to produce your own
 manifesto. This should reflect the technological and cultural changes that
 beckon in the 21st century.

Both 
typographic manifestos should reflect the content. Each should be between 
300-400 words in length and as such may require editing.

I chose the 1918 De Stijl Manifesto and I've done two versions for it. I think I prefer the Mondrian inspired grid more then the second one.

I had a lot of trouble writing my manifesto, I'm not a very political person so I just wrote it with a conversation tone. I then did the design to match the content of my manifesto. Don't know where the cross stitch/embroidery idea came from but I think it works.

Graham Bignell - New North Press - Letterpress project

Our brief was to design a poster in our group of 13 people on how to make design successful. So after much deliberation we decided to go with the idea of the process we go through to get a design just right.

I choose 'Bold or light', but I was limited with the font as there was only one font set that had both a bold and light option, so I used a border to accentuate them. At first I had the light squares under the Bold and the dark squares under the light to balance it out but I swopped them around as it was more effective and showed the Bold and Light a bit more. Also I had the 'or' in bold at first but changed it to the light version for a better effect.

And here are the results:

We had to measure the sides to make sure they were all centred and here they all are on the press after doing one proof of the whole poster.

We have asked Graham to make the bottom one red too. Can't wait to see it editioned!

Our Shrine - Part Two - Final badges

I decided to do a few tweeks to my badges as I felt the I heart needed to be bigger to make more of an impact. So here are the final final badges... promise!

Comic Sans Destroyed - Time lapse videos

So this is my first attempt at making a time lapse video in imovie - I've uploaded some low res ones.

The first one is really bad - I didn't have the switch fully on manual when I set the camera so the shot isn't great, also I started in the day and it looks underexposed and by the time it finished it was dark and over exposed. Also the moving background was distracting from the d being destroyed in the window. But I like the idea of a time lapse outside my front window, watching the world go by - I might have another go at this some other time but not for this project.

I love the second one and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I still need to work out a few things in imovie like the track fading out instead of just ending abruptly.

Comic Sans Destroyed

The brief:

I made my big d and little d in the wood workshop.

Here is a picture of my d's painted white - still need another coat of paint, I think.

I used the little d to make a mould in the casting workshop as I had a few ideas that needed to use the mould. I had to laquer the little d so that the wood wouldn't be pourous. I then made a base and four walls out of clay to hold the rubber and cut up some rubber for my mould. Richard in the casting workshop poured the melted rubber into the clay and the next day my mould was ready to work with.

Idea 1: Candle

I made a few candles in the casting workshop using a wick that I bought at an arts and crafts store down the road from my house.

I did a test run to see how the candle would burn and how long it would take as I thought it would be quite nice to have a time lapse video of the candle burning.

I borrowed a camera from photography over the weekend and set it up to take shots every 15 seconds. I now have about 2000 shots (1000 for each version I did), which I will need to make my time lapse movie, if I get a chance before assessment.

These picture were taken without a flash as I didn't want the flash to interrupt my time lapse. The camera is happily snapping away!

Idea 2: Ice Block

While I thought this idea would be good, I realised it wasn't a very original idea as I had heard a few people were doing it. Also I didn't count on the mould freezing and the letter broke up when I tried to get it out, so there went that idea.

Idea 3: Bath fizz bomb

I had never made these before and it was fun experimenting with the mixture. I made a basic fizz bomb recipe as I wanted it to be as white as possible, so i didn't add any oil or colouring.

My first attempt I thought was a flop - I could hear it fizzing as I had used too much liquid and started the chemical process off but it didn't fall apart when it was dry, so it was ok in the end.

I ended up with a very thick d and I had to file down the edges that spilled over the top of the mould.

After it was filed down it didn't look too bad.

My second try was much better, no fizzing sound and it came out perfectly from the mould.
